Hurricane Windows Testing
After a few awesome months of summer, sun, beach and much-needed rest, hurricane season is in full swing. With that, families need to protect their homes from the harsh outdoor environment when a tropical storm forms. Florida TAS 201 is a building code designed to test hurricane windows for their effectiveness; to ensure that they can protect your home in the event of a serious natural disaster.
Putting Hurricane Windows to The Test
The mandatory laboratory test starts with a lumber cannon that shoots a 9-pound 2×4 projectile flying at 34 mph (50 feet per second) directly into the window. That may seem a bit over the top, but these windows must be able to withstand large trees tipping over as well as flying debris such as roof tiles and palm tree branches that can pick up enough speed to cause some serious damage.
After the impact, it’s then forced to withstand 9,000 pressure cycles, half of them being positive cycles and the other half negative cycles. This variance in pressure simulates the pressure found in hurricane systems. The idea is to see if the window can still stay in place under different pressure volumes after a major impact. The strongest windows are capable of withstanding 290 mph winds.
At Max Guard, we go the extra step to ensure that we put our best product forward. Our hurricane windows are tested at 80 feet per second through 18,000 pressure cycles – double that of the industry standard. According to the State of Florida, our hurricane windows produce the highest rating in Florida.
Hurricane Window Approval and Installation
If the window passed the safety standards, the product receives a Notice of Acceptance (NOA) or approval documentation and it can be distributed into stores.
Its also very important that the windows are properly installed, or else the safety and effectiveness are not guaranteed. A hurricane window that is improperly installed can let in rain and debris into your home as well as leaving you vulnerable of a broken window during a storm.
Our team at Max Guard has been preparing our customers and neighbors for hurricane season with our durable hurricane windows and installation services. We ensure that our products are the best on the market.
