Palm Beach County Hurricane Protection
Here in Palm Beach County, having protection against hurricanes is a serious plus when looking for a new home. If you’ve recently moved into a new home or are in the middle of a house hunt and are curious if the home has hurricane impact windows, there are three easy ways to tell.
1. Look in the corner for any markings. These words will usually state the manufacturer, the thickness of glass, safety specifications, and any special certifications that the glass has acquired.
2. Look for a temporary label. Since hurricane glass is customized for each home and cut to size, sometimes the permanent markings in the corner have to be sacrificed. Instead of just leaving all of the information out, the manufacturer will put a temporary label stating what would have been on the permanent marking.
3. Look at your reflection. Since hurricane glass has two layers of glass, your reflection shouldn’t look like it does in your typical glass window. When you put your hand up to the glass, you should see an extra outline surrounding your hand to indicate that your hand is being reflected off of two pieces of glass, as opposed to one.
4. Ask a professional. If all else fails, it’s best to get a professional into your home to investigate. No one wants to be stuck in a hurricane with the protection that they thought they had.
If you’ve looked at your windows and you can’t check off any of these boxes, it might be time to invest in some impact windows.
